About

AI Image Fix has been created by Simon Judge. I am a long-time software developer with deep experience across mobile (iOS, Android) and Bluetooth across all platforms. You can read more about me at simonjudge.com.

I developed AI Image Fix as a hobby project to ‘scratch an itch’. At first, it was mainly something I wanted for myself: a straightforward way to manipulate and repair images locally on my own PC. After building it, I realised it could also be useful to other people who want practical AI image tools without having to upload their photographs to an online service.

You can read more about why I created AI Image Fix on the blog.

Why I Built It

The trend towards doing everything remotely, through online services and subscriptions, feels like it has got out of hand.

For image manipulation using AI, I wanted something different. I wanted an application that could work locally, using the hardware already in the PC, without sending private images to the cloud and without asking for a subscription just to carry out simple fixes.

Local AI can also be complicated. Installing models, choosing the right hardware drivers, understanding dependencies and getting everything working can be a can of worms, even for technical users. Part of the purpose of AI Image Fix is to explore how local AI can be made simpler, more practical and more accessible.

Why Local AI Matters

I believe running AI locally will become much more normal.

PCs are getting more powerful, and more of them now include hardware that can run AI workloads. NVIDIA GPUs are already very useful for this. Some newer PCs also include NPUs, although many of those still feel like a stopgap and are not yet powerful enough for the kind of local AI image processing this application needs.

At the same time, cloud AI companies appear to be heavily over-invested, with some investment even self-circulating between the same groups of companies. At some point, cloud AI services will need to make real money. When that happens, some services may disappear, become more restricted or become more expensive.

That will make local AI much more attractive. AI Applications that run on your own computer, keep your data private and avoid ongoing cloud costs are likely to become more important.

AI Image Fix is a small step in that direction.
